    Dear Students and Parents,

Despite weather issues, we thank you for what we hope was a good season for all of you with Tamanend Ski Club. Regretfully, we are unable to find a date to reschedule the missed trip from 1/25/24 where we would have the required teacher chaperones we need to align with available buses, the mountain, and the least controllable factor of weather. We choose our initial dates early (in the hopes the weather cooperates), and a tremendous amount of planning is involved in making all of this happen, including the donation of time from our teachers who volunteer to chaperone these trips. Unfortunately, district policy does not permit us to use parent chaperones. This is not an easy decision, and we know not a popular one; however, we are not able to find an agreeable date where all things align over the next few of weeks, and many of our teachers are now involved with other endeavors, which becomes even harder to traverse after President’s Day with the Kelly Anne Dolan basketball tournament, the musical, musical competitions, etc.

We are working with the bus company and mountain to receive refunds for this missed trip, and as we recover these funds, we will then initiate refunds to you for this 4th trip. More information on that will follow, though most refunds will occur through My Payments Plus back to the account you used to purchase the trips. If you paid by check, we will process a refund via check that will be mailed to your home address. This will likely take a little time, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this.

Our next trip is scheduled for WEDNESDAY, 1/31.

We will keep you posted on a hopeful reschedule date for the postponed trip on 1/25. We are struggling to align all things with dates that are available with our teacher chaperones and the bus company. We will provide further information as we have it. Thank you.

Please check this site regularly for important information, updates, and changes (if weather requires it). We will also send out e-mail blasts if there is a need to communicate information or a change. We ask that you check here first or email Mr. Sterner or Mr. Werner before contacting the school office. Thank you!

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION

    • HELMETS are MANDATORY. If you are renting equipment from the mountain, then one is included. If not, please make sure you have one. If you forget one or need one, and you are not renting equipment from the mountain, you will need to pay to rent one there ($15 per trip).
    • If you are renting equipment from Big Boulder, you MUST COMPLETE the attached RENTAL FORM AHEAD of EACH TRIP (a new form will be needed for EACH trip). The form MUST BE SIGNED by a PARENT/GUARDIAN.
    • We have learned that Big Boulder no longer accepts cash at the resort. If your child wishes/needs to purchase anything (food, drinks, otherwise), it appears they will need to use a credit/debit card or some app like ApplePay.
    • Watch the weather (Blakeslee, PA) for temperatures and conditions. It is typically 10 degrees colder there with more wind/wind chill than here at home.
    • AM DROP-OFF on school day trips: Please plan to drop off in the rear parking lot behind the gym between 7:00 and 7:20AM on our weekday trip days.  DO NOT drop off in the normal car rider line, as it creates a traffic jam. Once you pull behind the building, please pull all the way up to the end of the curb at the auxiliary gym entrance and offload as quickly as possible. Please try to avoid parking in the spaces if possible to minimize the need to back up in a crowded area of cars and pedestrians. Mr. Sterner or Mr. Werner will be there, and students will be able to enter through the doors there and proceed directly to store their gear. They are to remain in the auxiliary gym until 7:20 when they can then head to homeroom. They are NOT to be dropped off prior to 7:00. As soon as you have dropped your kids and gear, please exit by going straight ahead and around the loop. Please drive very carefully exiting from behind the building, as many of our staff park there and often aren't expecting an opposing traffic flow from behind the building.  Please carpool if possible. Please see the document attached below for further clarification. Thank you for your help with this!
    • Students riding the bus who need to drop gear in the locker room should report to the rear of the gym near the boys locker room as soon as they get off their bus.

    • Students will be dismissed at 2:30 on ski trip dates to get their gear and then promptly board the bus behind the building from the auxiliary gym. We will depart at 2:45PM. Students are encouraged to get work from their teachers ahead of time or should plan to work on it while traveling on the buses. All homework is due the next day. Ski club is not an excuse for not having work completed.
    • We will return by 10:15PM to the main bus loop in front of the building. We will have students update you when we are 30 minutes away. Please DO NOT PARK along the curb in the bus loading lot while waiting for pick up. Please use space in the middle of the lot or use the main parking lot. Thank you!
    • ALL students are expected in school on time the day after a trip!

    • If you have gear that can not fit in your locker the day of the trip, please review the AM Drop off procedure and map below. Drop off is between 7:00 and 7:20AM. There is less traffic the closer to 7:00 you arrive.

We recently sent an e-mail for students renting equipment from the mountain which stated: As we approach our first trip (whenever that may be), we are asking for your help to expedite the process a little and also to adhere to new rental forms/policies at the mountain. FOR THOSE RENTING EQUIPMENT FROM THE MOUNTAIN you and your child(ren) need to complete and SIGN the rental forms for all 6 trips. You only need to fill in the upper part of the form, and then you and your child(ren) need to sign at two places in the lower half of the form. A copy of the form is also available below with the areas of completion highlighted. The 2nd page of this document also helps you identify the type/level your child is (I, II, or III). For your convenience, we sent home a packet of 6 forms with your child(ren) on 12/12 to be completed. We recommend completing all of them between now and our first trip and sending the packet of 6 forms in your child’s ski bag so they are ready and there as we move through the season.

Thank you for what has been a great season so far! Based on a variety of factors (teacher chaperone schedules, upcoming events at Tamanend), we have opted to reschedule the 2 missed after school trips to a single full day trip on Sunday, 2/3. The time swap is equivalent as we are at the mountain for 3.5 hours on an after school trip, and we will spend 7 hours at Jack Frost on Sunday the 3rd.  Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we aim to make the best decisions possible for the safety of the students.

Our final trip is scheduled for Sunday, 2/3. Currently the weather forecast is for partly cloudy skies with temperatures between 27 and 37 degrees. We will depart promptly at 6:30AM from the front bus loop lot at Tamanend. Plan to arrive @6:15AM to load and board the buses and take attendance. We will return to the same bus loop in front of the building no later than 5:00PM (so no one misses kickoff : ). Please arrange to have a ride waiting. If we are running ahead of schedule, your child will let you know via phone/text. ALL students are expected in school on time the day after a trip!

IMPORTANT NOTE: If your child will not be riding the bus to and/or from Jack Frost because of alternate plans, but is still going to be at the mountain and needs his/her lift ticket, please adhere to the following: 1) We require a signed e-mail or note clearly indicating the plans prior to Sunday's trip. We ask for all e-mails or notes to be to Mr. Sterner no later than the LAST SCHOOL DAY before the trip (Friday). Notes can be dropped off to Mr. Sterner in room 106 by the student. 2) If the student is not riding up with us, the student needs to meet us at the bus @ 8:15 outside the white rental building at Jack Frost to get his/her lift ticket. 3) If the student rides up with us, but is not riding back with us, the note MUST indicate this, and we prefer that the student and the adult taking charge of the student check out with us at the buses at 3:00PM near the white rental building. Thank you for helping us make sure no student is unaccounted for.

    A few helpful reminders:
    • Dress appropriately for the weather and check the forecast before each trip. Temperatures are often 10 degrees cooler at the mountain than here at home and there may be an additional wind chill.
    • For weekday trips, see your teachers for homework assignments before the day of the trip to work ahead, or plan to work on the bus if you are able.
    • Pack food for your meals or plan to purchase it at the lodge ($15-$20).
    • Review the attached information sheets below for other suggestions.

With the change to the middle school schedule, how we organize and get ready for ski club in the winter will be different than in past years. We will make use of this website, student interest meetings, and e-mail to keep you informed of the upcoming season. Students should expect and pay close attention to initial announcements in lunch and on the TV this fall. Paperwork has already been distributed to interested students at this time. That paperwork is also linked further down the page. One major change this year with the loss of club meetings during the school day is that students and a parent MUST attend ONE of 3 MANDATORY after school informational meetings. Attendance will be taken at these meetings. We are providing 3 different dates/times to try and accomodate everyone. Those dates and times are in the paperwork and on the ski club calendar.  The last required meeting is on Thursday, November 30th at 7:00PM in the auditorium. If you have not yet attended one of these mandatory after school meetings, this is your last chance!

We are looking forward to another great season on the slopes as we turn the calendar to 2018-2019! We will be making announcements in building in the near future about joining the club for this coming winter. Some preliminary information is available below. Please read and review it carefully before committing. There is no rush as it is not first come, first serve. Please read below for what is required to participate. Thank you.

In order to participate in the club, it is MANDATORY that each student and a parent/guardian attend ONE meeting in November. For your convenience, we are offering the following dates and times: Thursday, November 1st @ 5:00; Thursday, November 15th @ 3:00 and Wednesday (CANCELLED DUE TO SCHOOL CLOSURE), November 28th @ 7:00. These will be held in the auditorium at Tamanend. Please choose the ONE that is most convenient for you to attend. It is not necessary for the student and parent/guardian to attend on the same date. We apologize for the cancellation of the November 15 meeting due to school closure. We will still hold the meeting at 7:00 on Wednesday, November 28th. We have also rescheduled the missed meeting on November 15th for 3:00PM on Monday, December 3rd in RM 106. Please contact us with any concerns.

Below are the necessary forms to be completed, signed, and returned to Mr. Sterner or Mr. Werner by Wednesday, December 5th. This is not first come, first serve. Please take your time completing everything properly, and we ask that you wait to commit (turning everything in) until you have attended one of the  required meetings in November. You can turn in the completed and signed forms at the end of the meeting you attend. Seventh and 9th graders will return all completed and signed forms to Mr. Sterner in room 106. Eighth graders will return theirs to Mr. Werner in the band room (203). Payments are to be made through , but checks are still acceptable (turned in with the forms) payable to Tamanend Middle School.      We are eagerly anticipating the snow to kick off the 2019-2020 season for Tamanend Ski Club! At this time, we held the 3 mandatory parent and participant meetings. All that is left is to make sure the necessary forms are fully completed, signed, and returned (please take care that this is completely done before turning in the forms) to Mr. Sterner or Mr. Werner by Wednesday, December 4th. This is not first come, first serve. WE HAVE ENOUGH SPACE FOR EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED ONE OF THE 3 MEETINGS in NOVEMBER (no lottery necessary).
