    “It is not knowledge, but the act of learning, not possession but the act of getting there, which grants the greatest enjoyment.” – 
     
    Put simply, the purpose of school is to learn, not to get good grades.  Success in this class is defined as a deep understanding of the subject, not straight A's.  Unfortunately, too often students are motivated by getting A's and B's and never learn the subject.  The problem with the approach of "trying to get good grades" is that students often take shortcuts - tricks, gimmicks, cramming and cheating - to achieve the grades they want.  This results in massive gaps in your education which makes it even more difficult to get good grades.  If, instead, you spend your time trying to learn the material, something amazing will happen - you will understand the subject and the good grades will happen naturally.  And, more importantly, you will leave this class with an education that will stick with you in the years to come.  So, STOP TRYING TO GET GOOD GRADES and you will succeed at learning the subject!

    As your teacher this year, I am here to help you succeed in this course.  But I cannot do it alone.  You must be motivated to succeed.  As the quote implies, you must be willing to dedicate a serious amount of time to this course.       

    • This means paying attention in class and taking good notes.
    • This means doing your homework with the goal of learning the material, not with the goal of just “getting it done”.
    • This means studying your notes every night, not just the night before a quiz or test.
    • Lastly, this means getting help as soon as you are confused with the material.  DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! 
    Follow this advice and you will have the greatest chance for success.  Best of luck on a successful year!
